One of the most beneficial parts of any smart home is an architectural lighting system, and the wireless Lutron HomeWorks QS solution added to this house takes charge of more than 180 light switches. The HomeWorks QS dims and brightens lights to preset intensity levels based on occupancy in rooms, time of day, home security status, button presses, mobile app, and voice commands.
Although elegant seeTouch keypads installed near each doorway offer quick and easy control over the lights in the room — as well as access to and control over music — “we rarely touch them,” says the owner. “Most of the time, we let the occupancy sensors and timers manage when the lights go on and off.”
For example, when the sensors notice that someone has walked into a room, they signal the Lutron HomeWorks QS system to brighten the lights to a certain level and stay on until the room is vacant. However, at night, the sensors ignore movement so that the lights stay off while people are sleeping. The exceptions are the hallway lights, which brighten to 10 percent to lead.
Personalized Keypad Control
Savant Automation works together with a Lutron keypad inside each room, providing one central point of control instead of two separate sources. The family can use keypads to control TVs, music, volume, media, and turn the room entirely off. The Savant app can be used alone, but with Lutron keypads located at a natural point of a light switch, it is easy for outside guests who do not have the app to control the room.
“AWAY”
Turns off all AV components, lowers shades, locks doors, sets the security alarm, and turns off the lights based on the time of day the button is pushed.
“GOODNIGHT”
Next to each bed, there is a Lutron 10-button keypad to execute different levels of “goodnight” for each room. For example, the kids’ rooms only turn off their suites, but the master bedroom shuts off the entire house when parents are ready to lock down the house:
The lights and TVs in common rooms around the entire house power down; sleep timers on bedroom TVs set to shut off after 45 minutes; shades lower; doors lock; alarms are set; HVAC adjusts to night mode; and the motion sensors change their scene programming to only light up at a very dim level. This way, when occupants are going to the bathroom or kitchen in the middle of the night, there is a soft glow lighting depending on the path they take to get to each room.

“WAKE-UP”
In the morning, a “Wake-Up” scene activates automatically — at a different time for each family member. It turns on music in the room, lights ramp up, bathroom TVs go to preset channels, HVAC changes to preferred levels on wakeup, and the alarm disarms.
